Bushwhacking 101

Jackson County is the headwaters to multiple Michigan Rivers and as such we offer the opportunity to paddle in a pure, natural environment. Unfortunately, nature sometimes provides us with obstacles in our streams that we must maneuver around; dams, bridges, deadfall, and fences to name a few. Do we go over? Scoot under? Get out and go around? Most importantly, how do we do this safely?

Bushwhacking 101 will take you into nature with a knowledgeable guide who has done this thousands of times. Classes will work out how to approach each obstacle and each person will negotiate the problem in the manner that is best suited to them. Because we are the headwaters, our rivers are relatively small and calm so practicing here is as safe as we can make it. We will choose our location based on the current conditions and your safety will always be our supreme concern.

Your tour includes snacks and beverage on the water, kayak and necessary gear, and instruction to safely enter and exit your boat and basic paddling strokes. Be aware that “bathroom” facilities are non-existent and shore landing areas are limited. Bladder capacity should be at least 3 hours.

Michigan has amazing waterways and incredible areas to explore. Don’t let a few deadfalls keep you from some of the most amazing adventures of your life. Come learn with us!

Cost: $130 including all equipment
